Do you think there is gender equality in Taiwan?
\n\n\n\n
In 1999, Taiwan became the first Asian nation to pass a law on domestic violence prevention. In 2019, it became the first Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage. And in 2021, it was sixth on the UN Development Programme's global gender inequality index, boasting the highest rank in Asia. Over the past few decades, many women in Taiwan have fought for equal rights in the aspects of voting, education, property ownership, work, and bodily autonomy, which is why our society is so amazing today.
\n\n\n\n
But is there really gender equality in Taiwan now?
\n\n\n\n
The labor participation rate of women in Taiwan exceeds 50%, but a woman's average salary is only 85% that of a man's, women only hold less than 30% of high-level corporate management positions, and only 13% of organizational board directors are women. Women's work, identities, and citizenship have been continually stigmatized since the outbreak of Covid-19, so women have become victims of witch hunts. There were 9,212 instances of sexual assault reported in 2020, women being the victims in 80% (7,406) of them. Women can legally apply for menstrual leave from work, but their supervisors make it difficult through such means as (illegally) requesting proof. Women and men are both responsible for bringing home the bacon, but most women, regardless of age, still have to single-handedly do the housework, rear the children, and even care for their husband's parents. Such inequality is widespread in Taiwan.

So what should we fight for now to provide women and society in general a better future? For Gender Equality Needs You Too!, Women of the World Foundation founder Jude KELLY will share what she and her team as artists and event planners have observed over the years regarding gender issues in the UK and among international art and culture circles. She will talk about how art and culture are a path to gender equality and how she has led art and culture organizations in promoting social issues and advocating the ideal society of gender equality, diversity, and inclusiveness.

Taiwan's road to gender equality is still under construction, and we hope to see you working on it too!
