Since the 70s, a construction ban for Shezidao led to 50 years of seclusion that sheltered its natural landscape and concealed its history. Lately, it is under the threat of urban regeneration.
\n\nFOCA conducted field research with Filipino artist Leeroy NEW on the unique social landscape of Shezidao. They transformed their initial findings into a phenomenal circus and installation art. In this circus video, the images of frozen bodies in moving pictures reflect the island frozen in time.

The Circus Life is a record of a group of circus artists surviving the time of the pandemic. Since Taiwan entered level 2 nationwide pandemic alert, some circus artists left the field due to financial considerations; some challenged stereotypes and explored the value of existence through their art; some considered new forms of circus performance; and others built bridges between performers and governmental organizations. Circus has always been about balance, and the performers are looking to juggle between their many roles. Such is Life.

\n\nWhite Gold is Phare's recent production and milestone on their path to tell stories of Cambodia through circus art. This docu-trailer chronicles the show's creation and Phare's struggles. "White gold" refers to rice, which signifies the abundance and exploitation of Cambodia. In the Khmer language, "nourishment" cannot be expressed without the word "rice." In the show, as values shift towards monetary interest, the characters plunge into competition, jealousy, greed, and self-interest to cope with the demands of the modern world.

Michael CUNNINGHAM, the late American choreographer and creator of "chance operations," created a new post-modern dance that determines the choreography sequence by throwing dice. What would it be like if CUNNINGHAM choreographed for the circus? Circus artist Sean GANDINI's tribute to the late choreographer was shot in Paris, New York, and London. The performers stand in different corners of the city, responding to the natural curves by juggling balls and pins, responding to lines in space with their bodies, creating infinite layers of images through the framing and stacking of shots.

\n\nIn Australia, circus art has developed a style of its own, showcasing both the artists' skills and social commentary. The film features two performances, You & I is a homosexual story filled with conviction and acceptance, using high-level acrobatics, trapeze, magic and dance. In The Long Pigs, three paranoid clowns work, play, and mutter in a rickety shack while a pile of shiny red noses emerge from beneath a rusty bucket. The show, a reference to the Melanesian Pidgin phrase for "human flesh," is a stylistically arresting performance rooted in physical and black comedy.

Some kids, who are great circus artists, can be found in the magnificent landscapes of Ethiopia. Hoola hoop, aerial hoop, and footing acrobatic, performed by artists as young as five years old. And so the Circus Debere Berhan begins its tour, a series of shots in which the various troupes in the Ethiopian circus company perform their numbers, blending with the landscape and underscored by an enchanting musical accompaniment. With the pandemic and subsequent lockdown of the UK, people are stuck in their homes imagining the sun and open air in front of their windows. Circus artist Nikki RUMMER uses the body as an organic medium to consider the physical experience of being in the midst of it. A boathouse for a stage, she emulates nature and crawls along the edge of the boat and rolls like the wind. On the river that keeps the city running, she uses her body to create an organic flowing image. Through framing and editing, a unique circus lyrical poem is created.

The exposed walls and fallen bricks of a construction site becomes the deconstructed scenery for aerobatics. The flesh moves and interlaces openly, pushing limits and creating dialogue. A tale about looking, about the points of view, about what we lost. A Circus-Cinema piece that plays with the theme of "the gaze", the sense of sight and its relationship with our ways of knowing and bonding emotionally. By removing the simple amusement and involving visually impaired performers, experience the wonderful balance of human interactions.

Living on a houseboat, she found herself bogged down during lockdown, from getting up in the morning, sipping her first cup of coffee, to climbing on the edge of the boat to train. She could only roam around the cabin, letting her thoughts wander and overwhelm her. In this tight space, she writes, thinks, and breathes for balance. The cinematography highlights spatial narrative and the corporeality that embodies inner emotions, allowing the audience to experience the inner world of the performers simultaneously.
