【2021 Weiwuying Online Children's Festival】Théâtre de la Ville - Kusomo et son Jalak de Bali
Kusomo, an Indonesian engineer fled to Australia after a tidal wave had ravaged half of his native land. A bird perched on his shoulder set him off from the other refugees. It was a Bali Mynah, a large and handsome white bird with a blue band of feathers around its eyes, a rare species threatened with extinction. He had lived with him since his childhood, his special friend.
At first the Australians looked after Kusomo and his precious bird; one day the bird is given to the care of a society for animal welfare and Kusomo is sent back to his home country. Shocked and hurt by the violent separation, Kusomo uses all means possible to find his bird.
In one of the scenes at a refugee camp, the script recited by several children is an abstract from No Friend But the Mountains, a non-fiction literature written by Iranian writer Behrouz Boochani.
Kurdish refugee Boochani fled Iran in 2013. On his boat journey from Jakarta (Indonesia) to Australia, he was intercepted by the Australian government and later detained in Manus Island. Boochani documented the unfair treatment refugees received at the camp on a mobile phone and sent his writing out in segments. This non-fiction novel published by Picador has won the top prize at the 2019 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. Following six years of imprisonment, Boochani finally regained his freedom in November 2019.
Tunisia has faced severe economic crisis since the Jasmine Revolution in 2010-2011. Many Tunisians illegally immigrated to Europe seeking for new opportunities. Among the many Mediterranean refugees, a Tunisian youth stood out in the crowds with a beautiful eagle perching on his shoulder. Based on this true story, the director wrote a fairy tale about climate refugee. Behind this fairy tale, the story discusses about self-confidence building and courage to unknown adventure.
