Chia-Ming Wang, one of Taiwan’s most innovative theatre directors, and Jiangsu Kunqu Opera Theatre, long considered the guardian of an art that dates back to the sixteenth century, will present Tale of the West Tower. This timeless Kunqu opera tells the love story of a young scholar and a courtesan. After falling in love at first sight, their romance is tested by their class divide and the rigid social mores, but they overcome the hardships through their persistence and courage and eventually reunite. Kunqu opera originated in the Ming dynasty and is one of the most elegant and intricate traditional Chinese arts. This modern abridged version explores the bright and dark sides of human existence and the universality of love and desire.
