[2026 Weiwuying International Music Festival] Weiwuying Contemporary Music Ensemble - Old and New
The program begins with a contemporary work for solo recorder. Though often associated with a traditional, ancient sound, its new expressive capabilities are set to be fully showcased—an opportunity to discover the instrument's unique potential in a modern context.
Following this is a specially commissioned piece by Taiwanese composer LIN Chia-ying. Her music, known for its solid orchestration, often features nuanced textural layers and a rich palette of timbres that inspire limitless imagination.
This festival's composer-in-residence, Dieter AMMANN's, composed pRESTO sOSTINATO, which was dedicated to the centenary of patron Paul SACHER, whose initials are cleverly concealed in the title. AMMANN masterfully weaves together objective techniques and subjective intuition, creating a sonic network filled with both divergence and fusion. In a very short span, the music shifts from a hazy, noise-like state to an energetic pulse. This dramatic change lends the work its intense tension, allowing the audience to directly experience the rich, layered, and diverse nature of sound.
Finnish composer Jukka TIENSUU's concerto, Appo for Solo Recorder and Orchestra, creates a fantastical soundscape by blending the recorder family's distinct timbres with the ensemble's expansive palette. The recorder soloist engages in a vibrant dialogue with the ensemble, and the use of unconventional playing techniques and stage positioning adds a fresh, new dimension to the performance.
The concert concludes with American minimalist composer Terry RILEY's classic, In C. This groundbreaking work consists of 53 short melodic phrases, which performers can repeat and vary at will. The performers are free to choose when to enter and exit, creating a compelling, ever-changing soundscape of chance and possibility.
