Artists Introduction
Sauljaljui
"Boundless Wildness"—Indigenous music icon Sauljaljui draws inspiration from Paiwan traditional chants, folk songs of the Hengchun Peninsula, and the yueqin. Fusing these roots with world music, she has created a distinctive and diverse musical style. Her contagious sonorous voice carries the belief that "music shows a path home," allowing cultural spirit to flow between the notes. In recent years, besides her music creation, Sauljaljui has expanded into new fields. She founded and held community-based music festivals, actively engaging in cultural activities and becoming a key driving force in her community. In 2024, she showcased her versatility by hosting the music program The Sound of Nasi.
Sauljaljui is a two-time winner of the Taiwan Indigenous Language Category at the Taiwan Music Composition and Songwriting Contest (2011 and 2014). Her latest album VAIVAIK (2024) marks her debut as a producer, featuring cross-border collaborations with the Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe, singer Putad Pihay from Outlet Drift, and Malaysian sape virtuoso Alena MURANG. Sauljaljui won the Gold Medal in World Music at the Global Music Awards 2025, and at the 36th Golden Melody Awards, she received the Best Indigenous Language Album Award and the Best Arranger Award for her song "Dipin Kari Tang" (Bread, Curry, Hedgehog).
Her international performances span Europe, North America, and Australia. Highlights include the Rainforest World Music Festival (Malaysia, 2017), Global Toronto (Canada, 2020), and ACC World Music Festival (Korea, 2023). In 2024, she performed at the Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), as well as other major festival stages, including Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic), WOMAD UK, and Sfinks Mixed (Belgium). In 2025, she continues her global journey with appearances at Folk Alliance International (FAI, North America) and WOMADelaide (Australia), demonstrating remarkable international presence and cultural dimension.
Her artistry has also been recognized by international critics. Simon BROUGHTON, renowned music critic and former Editor in Chief of Songlines, attended her performance at WOMAD UK in 2024 and later reviewed her new album. His article, published in the May 2025 issue of Songlines, highlights Sauljaljui's work as a powerful showcase of Taiwan's indigenous music to the world. ►Full article
