2025 Taiwan Composer Series - Seeing Music, Listening to Painting—MA Shui-long 10th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition
MA Shui-long (1939–2015) was a pioneering Taiwanese composer known for blending local elements with Western modernist techniques. His notable works, including A Sketch of the Rain Harbor, Concerto For Bamboo Flute and Orchestra(1981), Rhapsody in Guandu (For Piano and Orchestra), have been performed worldwide.
Beyond composition, MA played a vital role in arts education, advocating for artists' academic recognition and enabling folk artists to teach at universities. He was the only composer to receive honorary doctorates from three national universities and serve as a university president. His contributions earned him numerous awards, including the Special Contribution Award at the Golden Melody Awards and the Order of the Brilliant Star.
To honor his impact, the Taiwan Music Institute will host the "Seeing Music, Listening to Painting—MA Shui-long 10th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition" on November 7, 2025, at the National Library Exhibition Hall. This event will highlight his life, works, and influence on Taiwan's musical history.
