Masters Play V - Beyond the Music Boundary @WEIWUYING
Olivia TSAO and CHIEN Wen-pin revive the timeless memories of youth shaped by CHEN Chih-yuan's music.
In the trajectory of Mandopop, there was always a figure who stood quietly behind the spotlight. He never sought applause, yet helped countless voices shine through his golden touch.
He was CHEN Chih-yuan, a musician who wrote poetry through his songs and arrangements.
He gave voice to longing in CHANG Yu-sheng's "Miss You Every Day" and echoed loneliness and struggle in WANG Chieh's "Is It True That I Have Nothing Left." Each song felt like a love letter to the selves we once were. His arrangements were never mere ornament; they revealed the soul of the music.
Behind the scenes, he built dreamscapes for Mandopop, and we were the generation that met one another within those dreams.
Masters Play V once again presents a special tribute to CHEN Chih-yuan, led by Weiwuying Artistic Director CHIEN Wen-pin. In collaboration with Golden Melody Award Best Female Singer Olivia TSAO and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, this 2026 performance revives the legendary composer's work with care and reverence. Selected from thousands of songs and newly arranged, each piece is brought to life by TSAO's gentle vocal presence and her deep sensitivity as a songwriter. These familiar melodies carry a profound emotional resonance for our time.
How will we embrace the emotions that return when these Mandopop classics take on a new sound?
Perhaps it is more than a rearrangement of sound. Music has a way of renewing itself while staying true to its essence. The Masters Play series, presented exclusively by Weiwuying, has become the most devoted keeper of this musical legacy year after year.

In addition, CHIEN was winner of the "National Award for Arts" in 2014.
Singer|Olivia TSAO
Olivia TSAO, born in 1986 in Rende, Tainan, is one of Taiwan's most acclaimed singers and songwriters in the Taiwanese language. She first rose to fame in 2009 by winning twenty consecutive rounds in the Taiwanese-language category of the television show Super Star, earning a million-dollar prize and officially launching her music career.
TSAO is a gifted songwriter whose music blends Lo-Fi, jazz, and folk, overturning the sorrowful lament often associated with traditional Taiwanese songs and pioneering a musical "therapeutic Taiwanese" trend. Her signature works such as "Saltwater Tears," "If Tomorrow Comes," and "Memories of the Market," reveal emotional nuance and literary flair.
In 2021, her self-written album Original (自本) swept the Golden Melody Awards, winning Best Taiwanese Female Singer, Best Taiwanese Album, and Best Arrangement, firmly establishing her status as a leading voice in the genre. In 2023, she received a Bronze Medal at the Global Music Awards for her album Folk Tale (禁).
TSAO is not only a singer but also a songwriter and producer, having founded Haowen Entertainment to carry forward new possibilities in Taiwanese-language music. Her music offers solace, and her quiet resilience has made her a symbol of Taiwanese identity for the younger generation.
Songwriter|CHEN Chih-yuan
CHEN Chih-yuan (1950–2011) was one of the most influential arrangers, composers, and producers in the world of Mandopop. He began his career in the 1970s as part of the campus folk song movement and rose to become a towering figure behind the scenes.
In 1983, CHEN produced the soundtrack for the film Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing, which won Best Original Film Score at the Golden Horse Awards. In 1986, he co-founded Coden Records with LIANG Hung-chih, CHEN Fu-ming, NIU Ta-ke, and TSAO Chun-hung to promote original Taiwanese music. In 1995, he established Forward Music, launching the careers of artists such as CHANG Yu-sheng, A-MEI, and Van FAN, and ushering in a new era of Mandopop.
CHEN blended classical, rock, and electronic elements in his work, composing over a thousand songs and arranging more than ten thousand. In 2003, he won the Golden Melody Award for Best Arrangement for "The Flavor of Time," the Golden Tripod Award for Best Arrangement for "Forever Blue Sky," and Best Album Producer for Bonjour, My Love. The following year, he received recognition at the Golden Horse Awards for a song featured in the film The Last Night of Madam Chin. In 2008, he was honored with the Golden Melody Award for Special Contribution.
CHEN passed away from colon cancer in 2011 at the age of 61. Before his death, he completed a deeply moving final work titled "If One Day I'm Gone, the Tree Remains," a gentle coda to his life in music. His songs continue to be sung, and his spirit is remembered to this day.
