2025【Explore the Pipe Organ】July- December
Besides the breathtaking vineyard-style seating and outstanding acoustics at the Weiwuying Concert Hall, the pipe organ, located on the top floor, is another major highlight. If you're wondering what this largest organ in Asia can do, our Explore the Pipe Organ series of events is just what you're looking for!
Performances will be enhanced with other instruments, special lighting effects, and informative explanations, which will make the organ's diversity and charm more accessible and understandable to the audience.
In addition, the programs boast two unique features: The first is that they will be Close-up Shows—the stage will be transformed into a seating area to give the audience an even closer experience with the organ. The second is the Musical Chairs aspect: members of the audience will be permitted to get up and move to other seats between pieces of music to try out different perspectives and get an idea of which seats they would like to reserve for future performances.
So for an hour each month, come to our Explore the Pipe Organ events to see all the secrets behind this fascinating instrument!
Programs
8/27(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Organ Melody from Childhood】
During the joy of summer, the Explore the Pipe Organ series will continue with kid-friendly programs that will also bring adults back to their childhoods. Organist Hsiao-Yi YU has selected classics that even beginning pianists will have played, such as J. S. BACH's Prelude in C Major and R. SCHUMANN's Träumerei , along with organ classics from the Baroque period to our times. With her ever-flowing timbre, listeners will be led to recall their days of carefree innocence. Also, Cloudy Sky, Four Seasons, and Fantasia on a Taiwanese Folk Song , will especially touch Taiwanese listeners' hearts through new interpretations.
9/24(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Spring Pipe Organ Party】 ※Close-up Show
Late summer brings us close to the Moon Festival, a day dedicated to that natural light fixture in the sky perfect for nighttime strolls and a source of inspiration for many musicians. From the jazz piece Fly Me to the Moon and Golden Melody Award-winner The Moon Represents My Heart to the Taiwanese Hokkien classic “Four Seasons” from Taiwanese Suite , there are songs of both joy and sorrow, gathering and parting, showing that no matter how the world changes, the moon is always there to light your way forward. In addition, the Carpenters' "Close to You" and the song "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from the film The Wizard of Oz will be played along with classics by J.S. BACH, C. WIDOR, and J.P. SOUSA. And since it's a Close-up Show, you'll have an added dimension to your kaleidoscopic organ experience!
10/22(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Heavenly Resonance】 ※Musical Chairs
The organ, a must in traditional European churches, can produce not only a sense of power but also one of tranquility for the unstable soul. Organist Hsiao-Yi YU has selected the most comforting religious music in organ history: Gregorian chants, whose pure chords evoke a sense of solemnity and inner purity. Another four religious pieces by contemporary composers emanate with joy and warmth. Whether you're religious or not, the elegant melodies will give you a sense of belonging. Saxophonist Kenny TSAI will be there too. These two instruments, invented over a millennium apart, both have a timbre produced by metal tube-like structures, naturally giving them a mutual resonance. Also, it will be a Musical Chairs concert, so you can move around to different seats as you enjoy the divine music.
11/19(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Organ Masterpieces and Everyday Sounds】 ※Musical Chairs
Invented over two millennia ago, the organ is the most important instrument in the history of Western music composition. Many famous composers have produced organ works that are still loved today. Organist Sean JACKSON will put on a dazzling display of skill through classics by C. ORFF, F. MENDELSSOHN, J. S BACH, and L. BOËLLMANN as well as his own arrangement of a Taiwanese classic to portray how he views the beauty of Taiwan. Another of his arrangements, A Taiwan Soundscape , incorporates sounds from Taiwan's convenience stores, MRTs, and other such everyday places, which has received high acclaim since its premiere. During this Musical Chairs concert, listeners will hear a marvelously woven dialogue between the organ and everyday life.
12/24(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Christmas Feast of Joy】
Christmas has always been a major event and source of composition inspiration for the organ, an instrument commonly found in churches. Accompanying the organ at this concert is the trumpet, its sonorous timbre adding to the celebratory spirit. First, there will be three pieces of very different styles: L. VIERNE's Carillon de Westminster exudes a sense of dignity within liveliness, P. I. TCHAIKOVSKY's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is filled with the fantasy of winter, and L. ANDERSON's Sleigh Ride musically forms an image of winter fun through elegantly flowing notes. Then, four classics by J. S. BACH will present his miraculous capacity for composition in both static and dynamic aspects. After that, Trumpet Voluntary and Christmas classics Joy to the World & O Come All Ye Faithful will bring the holiday atmosphere to its climax. The grand finale will be French composer C. WIDOR's Toccata from Symphony No. 5, an exclamatory show of complexity and virtuosity. |
