Opera | 3/20(Sat)14:30 | Giuseppe VERDI's operas are generally full of Italian nationalism, yet his most beloved work—La Traviata— is a simple tale of love that depicts a courtesan who abandons her lavish lifestyle for true love only for it all to slip away as she perishes from tuberculosis. The melody VERDI composed for the character is so sincere and moving that it touched even Alexandre DUMAS fils, the author of the novel on which the opera was based. After seeing the opera, DUMAS fils said: "Nobody would have remembered my Lady of the Camellias in 50 years but for VERDI, who made it immortal." |
Traditional Chinese Opera | LIAO Chiung-chih The Living Human Treasures and NCO 3/21(Sun)14:30 | Beginning her career in her twenties and now in her eighties, LIAO is finally ready to reveal an influential part of her life onstage. As the ups and downs of her life cannot be separated from her career as a Taiwanese opera singer it has taken her over sixty years to work up the courage to bare her soul to the public. As a mother of four, LIAO once stated that she may not necessarily be a good mother but she is a responsible one. Not every woman entered motherhood fully prepared. To LIAO, this may be her original sin as a woman, the shadows of that night that even today she could never escape from. The faint sound of gongs and drums seeped out of the darkness coalescing into a vision of Taiwanese opera which became the light that would guide her. With her small frame, she resolutely faced down the experiences that burnt her and devoted her life to the art of Taiwanese opera. She would go on to become a teacher who, in the eyes of her juniors and pupils, patiently guided them with soft words of encouragement. It was Taiwanese opera that introduced her to the many flavors of life and it was from her sorrow in life that she developed a form of the performing art unique to her. She is LIAO Chiung-Chih, a living cultural treasure and the greatest Taiwanese opera Kudan. |

The Grand Organ Night - CHIEN Wen-pin X Iveta APKALNA X KSO 3/27(Sat)19:30 | Iveta APKALNA—the queen of the pipe organ—is a world-famous organist known for her passionate yet meticulous performance. APKALNA, by using her individual popularity and draw, revives classical music pieces for modern audiences, helping more people appreciate the beauty of the pipe organ. The concert will open with Brazilian composer Heitor VILLA-LOBOS' famous string piece in the style of BACH. In addition, music fans should be no strangers to BACH's most famous keyboard concerto, Concerto No. 1 in d minor, be it the harpsichord or piano version. We greatly look forward to hearing APKALNA's pipe organ arrangement of this piece, which shall no doubt bring a new depth and vibrancy to this classical piece. Known for his symphonies which are in fact concertos in form, master organist Alexandre GUILMANT composed many extraordinary pieces for the pipe organ; César FRANCK was another skilled musician and composer for the pipe organ who had a great influence on the development of classical music. FRANCK's oratorio Rédemption is filled with profound religious undertones that take the listener on a soul-cleansing journey, the experience of which lingers on even after the final note. This concert will be conducted by CHIEN Wen-pin and is guaranteed to be a phenomenal performance that music fans will not want to miss. |
Object Theater | Kiss&Cry Collective - Cold Blood 4/3(Sat)14:30 | Lights, camera, Action! Fingers cavort in a delightful miniature setting, the cameras hover in time to the music, a voice narrates. Film-maker Jaco VAN DORMAEL and choreographer Michèle Anne DE MEY are filming right in front of your eyes. A plane journey, a forest in the fog, seven unexpected deaths...Cold Blood unveils a series of different lives in a hypnotic story laced with offbeat humor. The show explores the miniscule, surveys little worlds where life is viewed through a kaleidoscope. With a certain lightness, life celebrates its final moments of happiness and memories file past, at times languid, at times more vibrant. |
Traditional Chinese Opera | Zheng ZhiLong, The Pirate King of Formosa 5/29(Sat)14:30 | Zheng ZhiLong, The Pirate King of Formosa is the flagship Taiwanese opera production of the 2020–21 season and part of the 4th Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival. Produced by the almost century-old Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Culture Group in association with Story Works Theatre Company's Sky HUANG and WANG Chiung-Ling, the opera is set to elevate Taiwan's theatre performances to a whole new level. It was the era of Great Maritime Exploration. Legendary historical figures arrived in Taiwan. The entire East Asia got caught in a storm on a scale never seen before. There was no order and no rule on the sea. Maritime law would not come into existence for another century. Taiwan, a historically neglected isle off the mainland, leaped into prominence. One must survive the thrilling conquests of humanity and carve out a unique path in order to prevail here. Zheng ZhiLong, The Pirate King of Formosa is a re-imagination of the epic maritime battles that shaped our understanding of history. Renowned stage actress SUN Tsui-Feng is set to play the titular character alongside "no. 1 male jester of Taiwanese opera" CHEN Sheng-Zai, emerging performers CHEN Chao-Ting, CHEN Tzu-Hao, and LI Yu-Chen, as well as the Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Culture Group. |
Music Theater | Storytelling concert - Deep Lake Man 6/6(Sun)14:30 | Deep Lake Man was composed and written by Japanese musician Koji SAKURAI, who has lived in Taiwan for the past 27 years. The piece's copious emotional melodies and the vast combination of sounds involving the sheng, erhu, pipa, cello, percussion instruments, keyboard, electronic music, and human vocals create a story that transcends time, leading the audience to immerse themselves in the story and broadening one's realm of imagination while listening. The piece was inspired by the story of WANG Liulang published in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, which depicts the close friendship between an old fisherman named HSU and a water ghost called WANG Liulang. Stage director Yung-San CHENG built upon the folktale and created a whole new story, adding additional characters such as HSU's wife and a daffodil fairy, and strengthening aspects of emotional characterization in the story, resulting in a richer storyline. |
