Despite the pandemic, you can still travel the world through dance!
Since 2016, the Taiwan Dance Platform started to collaborate with Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid (Madrid Choreography Platform) and the Chiayi Performing Arts Center. Each platform nurtures local talents and has a recommendation system which supports the exchange between promising artists and critics. After four years of constant dialogue and first-hand experience, three platforms joined forces. They launched the Dance South project in 2020, offering dancers for southern Taiwan and southern Europe extensive and sustained residency and exchange. The Shinehouse Theatre, located in Monga, has started to branch out from drama to dance in the past two years. It uses nongovernmental resources to discover unfinished or ongoing experimental dance works from Taiwan and abroad, allowing young dancers to express and network.
The first-ever Learn about Dance has invited the promoters behind these platforms to talk about how they solved problems creatively, integrated resources to create a unique platform for performances and exchanges.

Taiwan Dance Platform (TDP) launched the Tempo on the Screen series in 2018, introducing dance films, animations, and experimental visuals to new audiences and those who love both film and dance. This year, the "Encounter‧Dance Film" exhibition will showcase dance films created by artists from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and France. The exhibition is held in conjunction with the "Freedom of Movement" exhibition presented by TDP in association with Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid, and the Chiayi County Performing Arts Center. "Freedom of Movement" will display dance films that were part of the cross-cultural exchange with Spain.
Dance films have been around for decades. This artistic medium combines dance and cinema into a high-intensity art form that accentuates the body's movement through time and space. In recent years, dance films have gradually attracted artists' attention, who experimented with the medium. From works like Afterimage for Tomorrow, and the ONE Minute VR Stage APP created by Weiwuying artist-in-residence, CHOU Shu-yi, and the Digital Art Center, the infinite potential dance films is plain to see.
In this post-pandemic era, TDP invites well-known directors, dancers, curators, and dance critics to talk about a new wave of creation in response to the pandemic. Do dance films have the best chance of attracting more (new) audiences for dance in times of change? Let's find out.
