【Basic Course】
Hours and dates: 9:00 – 18:00, August 8 (Saturday) – 16 (Sunday)
Eligibility: Teens aged 15 to 18 who are interested in performing arts
Tuition fees: NT$1,500
Seats available: 30 (first come first served)
Basic Course │ Activities for Both Groups
- Body and Movement: Expressing oneself clearly and confidently onstage is no cakewalk. Even making a simple class presentation involves a certain degree of performance. How can you use your body to communicate by showing instead of telling? Discover the secrets of your body and let it “speak” for itself.
- Brainstorming: How much time do you spend on social media, and how much do you spend reading and pondering the meaning of the words you see? Focusing on Chinese poetry, this class explores the ways in which the imagination takes flight in the interpretation of poems. It sets no limit on the number of avenues of thought that can be derived from the text and invites you to feel for yourself how reading poetry out loud connects word and sound.
- Space and Objects: Space is a medium of expression and performance. How do artists use space to tell their stories? We will tell the stories behind everyday objects and find the connection between these objects and the space they live in.
- Scoring and Voiceovers: What is it about the perfect soundtrack that makes it tug at your heartstrings, and how does dubbing affect a work? Be prepared to immerse yourself in music and sound as emotional drivers that set the mood and sharpen perception.
- Voice: How can we manipulate and make use of our voices? Through a number of vocal games, you will learn more about the mechanics of your own voice and learn how to use your voice to add emotional expression and improve your delivery.
- All about Musicals: What exactly is a musical? How is it different from a regular play? We’ll uncover the secrets of musicals, beginning with their structure and composition.
- Photography, Light, and Shadow: Photography is more than just light and setting; shadow, too, is an element of photographic composition that enriches our sense of depth and perspective. The seasons, the weather, and the time of day all give the light we see a unique feel. In this class, you will be guided to observe the interplay of light and shadow as it influences the way we see life.
- Lighting: Have you ever paid close attention to the lights that populate your life? Be it sunrise, sunset, stars in the night sky, the Milky Way, street lamps, or bonfires, how does light make you feel? Lighting can be a deeply personal experience that is worthy of exploration in the theater space.
- Costume Design: We can tell a character’s historic milieu as well as their personality from their costumes. How do costume designers determine what a character should wear, and how does an individual’s personality affect their clothing choices?
- Make-up and Styling: Can make-up really change one’s age and appearance with the audience none the wiser? Why do actors need make-up? And what is it that sets a good make-up artist apart the crowd?
- Weiwuying Tour: The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts is committed to cultivating performing arts talent in southern Taiwan. We will take a tour of the Weiwuying and see what surprises it has in store for us.
- Master Class – Actors: Actors are the public face of a production, a position which puts them under great pressure, both on- and off-stage. What do actors give up to be in the spotlight? We will hear several actors’ success stories.
- Master Class – Production Designers: What is production design? What do production designers do? How do they build a set from scratch? We’ll go behind the scenes and find out.
- Proposals and Closing Ceremony: On the last day of the 2020 Weiwuying Teens in Theater, each group will put on a final performance for the other group. Students will work with their mentors and teaching assistants to design and present a performance based on a given theme through eight days of discussion, learning, and rehearsals, with complete free reign over its content and style.
- Homecoming: 2020 marks the fifth Weiwuying Teens in Theater camp. This year, camp alumni will pay us a visit and share their accomplishments and what they are up to now.
