Although written in 1854 as the first of his three piano trios, the Op. 8 in B major by Brahms was heavily revised in 1889, showing its youthful exuberance of friendships with the Schumanns and Joachim in its opening movement, yet looming over Robert Schumann’s tragic end in its final movement. Schubert’s 2nd piano trio is written shortly before his death, its simplicity is full of vitality, and its intricate harmonies in the last movement shows his connection to the classical traditions of Mozart and Beethoven, both the spiritual masters of the great German Romantics.
