You will find in BENSHI’s 9th issue of 2019 a compendium of historical and cross-cultural differences in our ways of speech. These outlandish yet interesting differences may pique the interest even of people completely indifferent to this subject. We all have our own delivery and translation systems, be it through an illusion of truth, talking at cross purposes, making witty remarks, or a game of charades. As long as the purpose of communication is met, the rest is merely subjective feeling that cannot be described in words.
Although we converse on a daily basis, we often find ourselves unheard or stumbling over our words. Sometimes we communicate wordlessly, at other times it feels like we’re talking to a wall; occasionally we lose our train of thought altogether. However, conversations can be held with more than just words; they can be achieved through music or conducting. Step into another person’s shoes to observe their way of communication, and you may find the world a more delightful place!
