Conductor|Jerry HOU
Taiwanese-American conductor Jerry HOU is recognized for his commanding technique and insightful interpretations. Having studied conducting with Jorma PANULA in Finland, HOU is known for his versatility across various styles and genres. He has conducted a wide range of repertoire from classical to contemporary, collaborating with acclaimed composers such as Kevin PUTS and Steve REICH.
HOU recently concluded his celebrated tenure as Resident Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, becoming the first person to hold that position in the orchestra's history, and as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. He began his association with the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Jaap van ZWEDEN in 2021, first conducting the orchestra in 2022. HOU made his NY Phil debut leading a Young People's Concert (YPC) in 2023, and returned last season to conduct seven concerts to celebrate the series' centennial. As Cover/Assistant Conductor, he worked closely with Esa-Pekka SALONEN (Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony), Marin ALSOP (Music Director Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra), etc. Highlights in 2025 include the collaborations with Marek JANOWSKI and Robin TICCIATI.
HOU is on the faculty of Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where he serves as Artist Teacher of orchestras and ensembles.
Evergreen Symphony Orchestra
Founded and supervised by the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation, the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) is distinguished by its outstanding professionalism and team spirit. The orchestra offers exceptional performances of classical music while fostering young musicians and cultivating a perspective that is both rooted in Taiwan and open to the world. From 2007 to 2023, the position of Music Director and Chief Conductor was held by Prof. Gernot SCHMALFUSS. Starting January 2025, the ESO welcomes the internationally renowned conductor Jaap van ZWEDEN as its Artist-in-Residence.
Over the years, the ESO has worked with such international musicians as conductor Helmuth RILLING; tenors José CARRERAS, Plácido DOMINGO, Luciano PAVAROTT, and Andrea BOCELLI; sopranos Renée FLEMING and Sarah BRIGHTMAN; violinists LIN Cho-liang, Mayuko KAMIO, and TSENG Yu-chien; violist HUANG Hsin-yun; cellist YANG Wen-sinn; pianists Robert LEVIN and LANG Lang. The ESO also invited preeminent violinist Zakhar BRON and four former winners of the prestigious International Violin Competition "Premio Paganini" to conduct master classes and give a series of concerts.
Since 2004, the ESO has launched its international tours. Highlights include performances at the Ravenna Festival and the Ravello Festival in 2012, as well as at the Sydney Opera House and the Brisbane City Hall in 2015. In 2018, the ESO was invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Evergreen Group, performing in Taipei, Beijing, etc. The ESO is bringing Taiwan to the world, connecting our island with the global community, and will continue to share Taiwan's music and culture with the world.
