A Fantasy of Dance : Opening Concert program will depart from the religious and solemn nature of stereotypical organ music and showcase the instrument's playful and fun side. The first part of the concert will be performed by Dutch organist Aart BERGWERFF of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and will consist of dance music pieces performed on pipe organ, including several famous tango pieces composed by Argentine composer Astor PIAZZOLLA, Tango, and a selection from The Firebird composed by Russian composer Igor STRAVINSKY, as well as Dutch composer Simeon TEN HOLT's most popular work Canto Ostinato.
\n\n\n\n
Although improvisation was once considered a requirement among concertists, it is a quality scarcely found in today's classical music scene that seeks to remain faithful to original compositions and give accurate performances. Thankfully, this time-honored practice can still be found in organ music, in which in addition to the spontaneous performances still given in church services, organs also played the indispensable role of musical accompaniment in the silent film era. Therefore in the second half of the concert, the Weiwuying Concert Hall will transform into a movie theater as Dutch organist Hayo BOEREMA of the St. Lawrence Church in Rotterdam takes the audience on a journey back to the beginning of the 20 th century. With his improvised live performance accompanying the works of the master of silent films Charlie CHAPLIN, BOEREMA will guide the audience to feel the reality of the here and now and relive the glory of the silent era.

Artists Introduction
\n\nAart BERGWERFF
\n\nAart BERGWERFF is a driven and versatile musician. He likes exciting and adventurous concert
\n\nprogramming. On the one hand Aart has a great passion for the classical repertoire and on the other hand he likes to find new ways and forms in organ culture. Thus, he regularly co-operates with video artist Jaap DRUPSTEEN. Together with the Turkish derwish dancer Kadir SONUK he created the performance East meets West, to the music of Canto Ostinato by Simeon TEN HOLT. Another example is the production Mi Corazõn, in which organ and tango dance meet.
\n\nAart is a teacher at the Rotterdams Conservatorium, part of Codarts Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Aart BERGWERFF studied organ, choral conducting and church music at the Rotterdams Conservatorium. He continued his organ study in Paris with Marie-Claire ALAIN and in North Germany with Harald VOGEL. He concluded his study in Paris and obtained the Prix de Virtuosité. In 2003 he was awarded the silver medal of the Société Académique "Arts, Science et Lettres" because of his merits for the French organ culture.
\n\n\n\n
Hayo BOEREMA
\n\nFostering the organ to be introduced and appreciated by a wider audience, is what inspires Hayo BOEREMA as organist, lecturer and composer. In his musical interpretations, Hayo is always motivated to look for contrast and color in compositions of both established and contemporary composers to involve a traditional classical music audience as well as a more experimentally curious audience. Hayo's repertoire stretches a long time period. It includes SWEELINCK and BACH as well as more contemporary composers, with a particular interest for Olivier MESSIAEN and French organ music from the 20th century.
\n\nAs a performer, Hayo often joins forces with choirs and orchestras. Additionally, he is regularly commissioned to compose. One of his major compositions, his Solemn Mass (Messe Solennelle), a composition for organ, choir, vocal soloist and percussion, was recorded recently and received with wide acclaim.
\n\nIn addition to his performances, Hayo is professor of Organ at Codarts Conservatory at Rotterdam. He gives master classes in interpretation and improvisation internationally. Also, he is welcomed as a jury member at various international organ competitions.

For the second concert of the Weiwuying Organ Festival, the main course will be chamber music with organ, in which different instruments—trumpet, flute, and piano—are used to showcase the many faces of the pipe organ. The pieces to be performed includes George Frideric HANDEL's Water Music Suite for Trumpet and Organ, Wilhelm Friedemann BACH's Sonata in e minor for Flute and Organ, and Franz LISZT's Les Préludes, Symphonic Poem No. 3, transcribed for Organ and Piano. The concert also features solo performances, including Johann Sebastian BACH's famous Toccata and Fugue in d minor, BWV 565, as well as his Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue for Piano.
\n\nThe organist is Christian SCHMITT, the artistic director of the festival, who made his first visit to Taiwan in 2015 to perform as a soloist in the National Symphony Orchestra's Season Opening Concert. The pianist is Grammy nominated Joseph MOOG, and the flutist is Tatjana RUHLAND of the SWR Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, HOU Chuan-an, principal trumpet of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, has also been invited to perform at the festival.
\n\nThe combination of trumpet and organ can be considered a perfect match of bright, brilliant timbre, while the combination of flute and organ delivers the gentle grace of woodwind instruments and the combination of organ and piano shows an energetic clash between the two kings of instruments. The pipe organ can be both exuberant and sentimental. Join us to experience the different qualities of organ music!

The rich and booming timber of the pipe organ is comparable to that of an orchestra. However, the instrument's scarcity poses quite a challenge for composers creating new pieces, or for soloists rehearsing with an orchestra; as a result, organ concertos are very few in number. The third concert and grand finale of the Weiwuying International Organ Festival brings performances on a never-before-seen scale, featuring three organ concertos as well as pieces for flute, piano and orchestra in a feast for music lovers.
\n\n\n\n
The three organ concertos to be performed in the concert all use special configurations to accentuate the uniqueness of the organ. These concertos are: Francis POULENC's Concerto for Organ, Timpani and Strings in g minor, the most famous organ concerto; Josef RHEINBERGER's Concerto No. 1 in F Major for Organ and Orchestra, arranged for strings and three French horns; Astor PIAZZOLLA's Aconcagua Concerto rearranged for accordion and orchestra. Additionally, the concert also features César FRANCK's Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra and Ferruccio BUSONI's Divertimento for Flute and Orchestra, both pieces with unique characteristics that are rarely performed in concerts. The event will see five world-class musicians perform on the same stage, along with the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra, conducted by CHIEN Wen-pin, Artistic Director of National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). With all the talents involved, this performance is definitely one to look forward to.

\n\n\n\n
Organ|Hayo BOEREMA
\n\n\n\n
Organ|Aart BERGWERFF
\n\n\n\n
Organ|Christian SCHMITT
\n\nChristian SCHMITT performs regularly with well-known conductors and soloists including Sir Simon RATTLE, Phillipe HERREWEGHE, Jakub HRŮŠA, Marek JANOWSKI, Manfred HONECK, Magdalena KOŽENA, Martin GRUBINGER, Juliane BANSE or Michael VOLLE. He has performed in renowned venues including Philharmonie Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, Musikverein Vienna, and Kölner Philharmonie. As an organ virtuoso, he is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic and internationally sought-after concert organists and chamber music partners of today.
\n\nChristian SCHMITT's great passion is the extensive romantic organ repertoire, yet his artistic spectrum goes far beyond that. He has given concerts on many of the historic organs of Europe and also devotes himself to contemporary repertoire. Christian SCHMITT serves as organ consultant for the restoration and reconstruction of organs, a.o. Berlin, Zurich, Lucerne and Brno. He is a member of numerous international music competition juries.
\n\n\n\n
Flute|Tatjana RUHLAND
\n\nOnce called the "Paganini of the flute" by a critic, OPUS KLASSIK winner Tatjana RUHLAND has numbered among the most acclaimed performers of her instrument at least since her Carnegie Hall début. In December 2018, she performed DEBUSSY's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune with the Berlin Philharmonic, described as "a fabulous faun" by Berlin's leading newspaper and highly acclaimed by the audience. Being the solo flutist of the SWR Symphony Orchestra (chief conductor Teodor CURRENTZIS) since 2000, she is a frequent guest in other radio, opera and symphony orchestras.
\n\nTatjana RUHLAND was born in Regensburg and received her training in Munich, New York and Siena. Besides winning first prizes at the German University Competition and the Prague Spring International Competition (1996), she is a laureate of the prestigious Kobe International Flute Competition (Japan, 1997) and the East&West International Auditions (New York, 1999) and has held a scholarship from the German Music Competition.
\n\n\n\n
Piano|Joseph MOOG
\n\nJoseph MOOG's ability to combine exquisite technical skill with a mature and intelligent musicality set him apart as a pianist of exceptional diversity. A champion of the well-known masterworks as well as a true advocate of rare and forgotten repertoire paired with his quality to compose and arrange, Joseph was awarded the accolade of Gramophone Young Artist of the Year 2015 and was also nominated for the GRAMMY in 2016.
\n\nJoseph has an extensive discography and has received countless awards for his recordings, as well as outstanding critiques from the international press: November 2017 saw the release of his eleventh CD featuring BRAHMS' Piano Concerto No. 2 and STRAUSS' Burleske which was nominated for the 2018 ICMA Awards. It was followed by his recording of DEBUSSY's complete Etudes and RAVEL's Gaspard de la Nuit released in November 2018 which was rated 5 Diapasons in France among many other rave reviews. His much-anticipated album Heaven and Hell of LISZT's Sonatas & Legends will be released in October 2019.
\n\n
\n\nKaohsiung Symphony Orchestra
\n\nThe Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1981. It was merged with the Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra in 2009 as "Kaohsiung Philharmonic Culture and Arts Foundation." In 2012, the orchestra officially moved into Dadong Arts Center, where it has a more exclusive and stable rehearsal space. The end of 2018 marked the grand opening of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), where the KSO participated in the center's inauguration. It is our hope that he orchestra will play a more important role in the center's vineyard style concert hall, which is the only one of its kind in Taiwan.
\n\nThe KSO has been invited to perform on international stages in the USA, Macao, Nanking, Shanghai, Qingdao, Suzhou, Singapore and Beijing. In 2017, the KSO was invited to the BEETHOVEN-themed Spring Green Music Festival in Kanazawa, Japan, as well as Hong Kong's 2017 Taiwan Culture Festival. With the self-development goal of becoming an internationally acclaimed orchestra, the KSO has gradually reached beyond city and country borders.

Weiwuying Organ Festival will make its grand debut in Spring 2022 from April 1 through 3 at the Weiwuying Concert Hall, where the largest pipe organ in Asia is located. German organist Christian SCHMITT serves as the festival's artistic director and has meticulously planned three concerts of different forms and styles. The first concert is titled A Fantasy of Dance : Opening Concert, the first half of which features boundary-breaking interpretations of dance music pieces in different styles, while the second half is a creative silent film performance that showcases the time-honored tradition of improvised organ performance. The second concert, titled SCHMITT and His Friends : One Night in Classic Baroque, utilizes different combinations of musical instruments to capture the colorful charm of organ music. The third concert, A Matinee with Masters : Concerto Classics, features three organ concertos of different styles—Romantic, contemporary, and boundary-breaking—and demonstrates the pipe organ's title as the king of instruments through its dominating presence over the orchestra.

\n\n\n\n
Organ|Aart BERGWERFF
